Last-Minute Llorente Penalty Sinks Valencia
Last-Minute Llorente Penalty Sinks Valencia
Athletic Bilbao 3-2 Valencia
Valencia travelled to San Mames tonight to face in-form Athletic Bilbao hoping to keep in touch with Sevilla and Real Madrid in the race for second place.
Realistically, with Barcelona’s fantastic form, second place is the best Los Che could hope for but it would be an incredible turnaround from the disaster of last season. Coach Unai Emery opted for Fernando Morientes to partner David Villa upfront.
Meanwhile, Bilbao are unbeaten in eight matches and coach Joaquin Caparros has been waxing lyrical, saying the rest of the league are running scared from his Basque side. Fernando Llorente one again started up front, looking to continue his excellent scoring run.
But it was the visitors that made all the early running and Valencia took the lead within two minutes, thanks once again to David Villa. The prolific forward ran onto a through pass from Mata and coolly slotted past Iraizoz to give his side a dream start.
However Bilbao’s current form has given them a belief that was missing at the start of the season, and they quickly drew level. David Lopez did brilliantly to get to the by-line and float a teasing cross into the area that was met by Gabilondo who confidently nodded home.
It was end to end stuff in the first half, and Valencia responded to going behind superbly, quickly regaining the lead. Once again David Villa was involved, sliding the ball across the goal to Fernando Morientes who had the simple task of tapping home. 2-1 to the away side.
But Bilbao just don’t accept defeat at the moment, and they once again levelled things up. Just before half-time, David Lopez swung in a dangerous delivery and this time Javi Martinez headed home, right on half-time.
After the thrilling first half, the second period was always going to have less incident, and despite the best efforts of both sides a winning appeared unlikely to come.
But in the last minute, Javier Martinez was brought down by Manuel Fernandes and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Fernandes was sent off, collecting his second yellow for the foul, and it had to be Fernando Llorente to step up and calmly score past Renan to give Bilbao yet another fantastic victory.
No defeat in nine now for the Basque side – from bottom in October to potential European challengers – its been quite a turnaround for Caparros’ side.

Torino 0-1 Roma
Pre-Match News
Torino coach Walter Novellino gave new signing Paolo Hernan Dellafiore his first start for the club. Meanwhile, Alex Calderoni was given the start in goal ahead of Matteo Sereni. Alessandro Rosina and Rolando Bianchi found themselves on the bench.
Luciano Spalletti had several absentees to contend with - including captain Francesco Totti, Mirko Vucinic, and goalkeeper Alexandre Doni.
First Half
Roma had plenty of the early pressure as they tried to build attacks through Jeremy Menez, but the first real chance fell to Torino as Saumel tested Giallorossi back-up keeper Artur from long range, who had to push the ball out for a corner.
However, Roma hit back immediately, Rodrigo Taddei's cut-back was hit ahrd by midweek hero Julio Baptista, but the effort was blocked.
The Giallorossi had a glorious chance to open the scoring after 15 minutes. A corner found Philippe Mexes at pint-blank range, but Calderoni made a fine reaction save, while Baptista and Mexes could not connect following the rebound.
Baptista caused trouble in the Granata backline once again. However, his control was lacking at the crucial moment, running out of room.
On 31' Torino created a wonderful opportunity as Amoruso's backheel in the box set Barone free, but the former Azzurri man misplaced his finish from close range under pressure from Mexes' slide tackle, the move also may have been offside.
Nothing else of note occurred before the half came to a close, as the sides were unable to break one another down.
Second Half
Torino began the second half pushing forward, but a give-and-go was halted when Stellone was judged offside.
Roma had one of their best chances of the match when Menez's pass split open the defense, but Calderoni saved Taddei's low drive with his feet to keep the game scoreless.
Austrian player Saumel tried his luck from distance again, but the ball flew wide to Artur's left. Walter Novellino tried to inject some creativity into his side by inserting Alessandro Rosina and he immediately had an impact, putting in a fine cross for Diana that was not turned on goal.
The home side seemed the much more determined in the second half and were controlling the proceedings, throwing cross after cross into the Roma area and pinning the Giallorossi in their own half.
Rosina was involved once again on 71 minutes, when his ball into the area was right on Stellone's head. However, Mexes was alert to the danger. Soon after, Diana was in all alone, but was called offside. Perhaps a fortunate decision, as his finish was embaressingly off target.
Rosina continue to dazzle the crowd with his twists and turns in midfield, but still the game remained deadlocked going into the last 15 minutes.
Menez used his speed on the counter, but Baptsita's turn and strike ended up high over the crossbar.
Substitute Alberto Aquilani then tried a spectacular bicycle-kick, folllowing Baptista's control, though his connection with the ball was poor and it ballooned out for a goal kick.
Rosina's mazy run saw him beat two men, but Mexes was able to pluck the ball off of his feet, just before the Torino number ten was going to release his shot.
In the final minute, Rosina's cross was deflected, but the spinning ball was picked up by Artur before it reached Stellone.
Roma had been on the back foot for the entire second half, but Baptista came up with a fantastic injury time winner! His bicycle kick found the back of the net to give Roma three precious points.
Meanwhile, Barone's complaints were to no avail, as he was sent off and a spirited Torino were resigned to a 1-0 defeat.

Bravo The Gunners !!! RvP is MOM !!!
Arsenal Hantam Hull 3-1
Rossi Finza Noor - detiksport
Hull - Arsenal berhasil meraih tiga angka penuh dalam lawatan mereka ke kandang Hull City, KC Stadium. The Gunners pulang dengan membawa kemenangan 3-1.
Hull sendiri bukannya tampil jelek. Mereka bahkan sempat membuat pendukung Arsenal deg-degan ketika berhasil menyamakan kedudukan 1-1.
Dua menit berselang, Hull membalas melalui sepakan Daniel Cousin.

Valencia And Villarreal Share Six Goal Thriller
Valencia and Villarreal provided a tremendous spectacle on Saturday night, but neither side could claim the three points.
Unai Emery decided to use David Albelda as a makeshift right-back, following the suspension of Miguel. Otherwise, Los Che lined up as expected.
Villarreal, meanwhile, kept Robert Pires on the bench, granting Ariel Ibagaza a start. Guiseppe Rossi and Joseba Llorente were paired together up front.
First Half
These derbies are never short of incident, and it only took two minutes for this one to ignite. With the first attack of the game, Joaquín's cross from the left found Rubén Baraja, who headed home with ease to give Valencia a dream start. By contrast, it was the last thing a struggling Villarreal side needed.
They were down but not out though, as Ibagaza almost equalized instantly. His chip nearly caught Renan out, but the keeper managed to tip over the bar. A melee ensued from the resulting corner, but Valencia somehow managed to clear off the line.
Villarreal were coming back into the game, but all such plans were abruptly halted on ten minutes, when Valencia got their second. Albelda played David Villa in on the right, and El Guaje faked before shooting in at the near post, thus compounding the Yellow Submarines' misery.
Despite the scoreline, Villarreal continued to look lively, albeit without any end product. After a brief lull in play, the game exploded again on 37 minutes. First, Llorente headed down Joan Capdevila's cross, but it was cleared off the line after Renan missed. Valencia then went immediately up the other end and nearly scored, but David Silva's shot from ten yards out flied over after hitting the bar.
On the stroke of half-time, Valencia thought they had a third, only to see the ball come back agonizingly off the post, as Juan Mata flicked on from Villa's cross. That was not the end of the action, however, as Villarreal mounted one final attack, and scored.
With mere seconds remaining on the clock, the visitors earned a corner, which found its way to Fabricio Fuentes, who had only come on for the injured Gonzalo, and he duly headed in from six yards, to set up an intriguing second half.
Second Half
Manuel Pellegrini made an immediate change, bringing Edmilson on for Sebastian Eguren, presumably to prevent his side from going a man down. On 52 minutes, Santi Cazorla had a brilliant chance to equalize, but he could only volley Capdevila's cross well wide, with only the keeper to beat from about six yards out.
While there was certainly no shortage of intent in the second half, both sides were finding it harder to create genuine opportunities. The frustration began to show, as a host of rash challenges began to fly in. With about half an hour remaining, Manuel Pellegrini made his last sub, withdrawing Bruno for Pires.
On 66 minutes, Valencia came close when a long throw found it's way to Mata, whose bicycle kick flew just over. Five minutes later, Villa should have sealed the game, but he somehow contrived to tap Siva's cross over the bar.
At the other end, Santi Cazorla wasted another golden opportunity to equalize, although this time Renan rushed out and made a smart save from the attempted chip. It was not to matter though, as the visitors equalized moments later.
Cazorla released Llorente down the left, but while his initial shot was blocked by Renan, he pounced on the rebound from an even tighter angle, smashing the ball into the roof of the net. Their joy, however, was to be short-lived.
Valencia won a corner and played it short to Mata, who crossed for Edu to rise superbly and head into the top corner. One of the game's unluckiest players had come on and scored the vital goal, and the Mestalla erupted.
Incredibly, he nearly doubled his tally with an almost identical effort from a free-kick, but this time Lopéz saved brilliantly to his right. Meanwhile, Godín saw a header of his own flash just wide of the far post at the other end. Suddenly, the match had exploded back into life.
The drama, however, had only just begun. With eight minutes left, Capdevila won one of the softest penalties ever to have been awarded. Going down under a feather of a touch from Joaquin at the edge of the box, he looked as surprised as anyone when the ref pointed to the spot. Rossi duly stepped up sent the keeper the wrong way, making the scores level yet again.
With five minutes to go, the Italian came close again, but his shot from the left was well saved by Renan. David Villa then broke into the box and had a deflected shot which almost looped over Lopéz. Mass confusion ensued from the resulting corner, but somehow the ball stayed out.
Valencia had one final opportunity from a free-kick, but Mata's header flew over. That was to be the last action of a frantic derby, a both sides earned a point that may prove vital in the weeks to come.

Bendtner Breaks Bolton's Resistance For Arsenal
Arsenal stretched their unbeaten Premier League run to seven games with an 84th miniute from Nicklas Bendtner after Bolton - who've now lost four on the trot in League and Cup - had provided stubborn resistance and looked on course to frustrate the Gunners.
Arsenal centre-back Kolo Toure was back from injury and named as captain in the absence of Cesc Fabregas, while Johan Djourou and Denilson were also back in the side. Bolton were missing suspended captain Kevin Nolan, and Chris Basham made his full debut, but with so many injuries, manager Gary Megson could name only four substitutes. However, the Arsenal bench boasted only Nicklas Bendtner as the only recognised first-team player.
Bolton set their stall out in very defensive fashion, but their plans were nearly undone earl;y on when Samir Nasri picked out Robin van Persie and the Dutchman showed superb control, flicking the ball up before volleying just over the bar as Arsenal took control.
A ball from Abou Diaby thumped straight into the face of Ricardo Gardner, who needed some treatment, before Johan Elmander limped off and had to be replaced by Mustapha Riga, leaving Bolton's bench even more threadbare.
Arsenal were dominating possession but failing to penetrate Bolton's dogged defence, abnd it wasshaping up to be another frustrating afternoon for the home fans at the Emirates. Wanderers' first attempt on goal didn't arrive until after the break, when Matty Taylor's header was comfortably saved by Manuel Almunia.
But Bolton's game-plan was working well, with Arsenal huffing and puffing but failing to find a way through the visitors' massed defence.
Carlos Vela came on for Diaby, before Nasri played a ball that put Emmanuel Adebayor clean through, but the Togo striker dwelt too long before shooting and saw his effort blocked by Andy O'Brien when heshould have done better.
The outstanding Van Persie hit the post with a low, close-range shot as Arsenal went close to breaking the deadlock, and as the pressure on Bolton mounted, Kolo Toure forced Jussi Jaaskelainen into an excellent save with an effort from outside the box.
Bendtner came on for Emmanuel Eboue and immediately sent a header straight at Jaaskelainen from close range, but it was the Dane who finally made the breakthrough, Van Persie crossing from the left and Bendtner showing real determination to slide in ahead of his defender at the far post to poke the ball into the net.
Bolton had parked the proverbial bus in front of the goal in a 4-5-1 formation and made life difficult for the Gunners, who without the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Tomas Rosicky and Theo Walcott were struggling for a creative spark. But the Trotters were guilty of a lack of concentration on the goal, though they appeared to be tiring and of course were themselves handicapped by suspensions and injuries.
Danny Shittu and O'Brien had worked stoically at the back supported by an industrious midfiel;d, and they might have equalised almost immediately - Kevin Davies having a golden opportunity but shooting straight at Almunia from eight yards.
Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Djourou, Clichy, Eboue, Diaby, Denilson, Nasri, Adebayor, Van Persie.
Subs: Fabianski, Vela, Ramsey, Wilshere, Bendtner, Bischoff, Gibbs.
Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Basham, Shittu, Andrew O'Brien, Samuel, Taylor, Muamba, McCann, Gardner, Elmander, Davies.
Subs: Bogdan, Riga, Fojut, Obadeyi.

Palestine Embassy Thanks Kanouté For Support
Freddy Kanouté has proved on many occasions during his career that he wants to use his footballing talent to help other causes, and last night the Malian bought off-the-field events to light again.
After scoring against Deportivo La Coruña in the Copa Del Rey, the striker lifted his top to reveal a t-shirt, with the word Palestine written across it.
The message was a simple show of support for the Palestinian cause in the Middle-East, and today, it received thanks from the Palestine embassy.
Speaking to Radio Marca, Mahmud Aluanen, counsellor for the embassy, expressed his gratitude to Kanouté, and said that he believes many back in his country will be grateful too.
"It is a very important step," he began.
"The Sevilla striker has shown himself to be very brave by supporting our region in a public act like he did.
"Sportsmen are human beings, and they cannot hide their feelings. They have all the right in the world to express their opinions in areas that question human rights. I am sure that all Palestinian children, who love Spanish football, will be moved by this gesture."
Kanouté has been a staunch follower of Islam since he turned 20 and back in 2006/2007 refused to wear a shirt sponsored by gambling website 888.com, because betting is against Islamic principles.
On this occasion it seems that he could face a fine for his actions though, but he was defended in part by the Israeli ambassador in Spain, who said he does not believe it will generate violence.
Speaking to Radio Marca, Raphael Schutz, called for everyone to come together in a bid for peace, and confirmed he did not have an opinion on the incident.
"We all have to act together so that there can be peace in the region...The mixture of politics and sport can sometimes be bad, but not when there is a very specific opinion on display. I believe that [Michael] Owen did something similar to show his support for dock workers in Liverpool, and that had a positive reaction," he mused.
"One must respect the action, but I do not have a clear opinion. I do not believe it will generate violence, I saw the game, and the shirt said nothing more than Palestine. There was no incitement against Israel and I do not believe it will start any violence."

Villarreal Game Will Be Special - David Albelda
Valencia against Villarreal this weekend is arguably the biggest match of the weekend, and for David Albelda, it takes on extra significance, as he has played with both clubs.
The midfielder was on loan at El Submarino Amarillo for two seasons before establishing himself at Valencia and today, he declared the match 'special', before discussing the importance of it.
"We take it as a game more, with the intention to win and to move seven points clear of them. That would be a crucial gap with a team also competing for the Champions League places," he mused.
"Villarreal are a Champions League team though, and they have a good foundation. They are doing very well and their progress is noted, I believe it will be a very difficult match."
Valencia will certainly be favourites for the match though, even more so when one takes into account that Marcos Senna is suspended.
Albelda praised the Spaniard today, describing him as "important and giving a lot to the Villarreal midfield", but said that even without them they are a "great team and will be just as tough".
Miguel Misery
Naturally, Albelda was also questioned about the Copa Del Rey clash with Racing Santander last night, which saw both Vicente and Miguel sent off towards the end.
The experienced midfielder could not comment on the first dismissal, but was clear in his thoughts regarding Miguel's dismissal.
"The sending off of Vicente I cannot talk about because I was on the bench, but the referee must have seen it clearly," he declared.
"As for Miguel, his attitude afterwards cannot be justified, but it come after two refereeing errors; neither were fouls and certainly not cards.
"Miguel was annoyed that he was sent off without doing anything. Everyone in football knows these things happen and will continue to happen."

Spalletti Not Worried By 'Five Star' Milan
Roma coach Luciano Spalletti admits the showdown against Milan on Sunday will be difficult, but he is confident in his side's abilities.
The Giallorossi welcome Carlo Ancelotti's men this weekend, with the game touted as being a potential difference between a Champions League or UEFA Cup place come the climax of the season.
While Milan have all their mega stars available for the clash, Spalletti has a number of injury worries as Alberto Aquilani, Rodrigo Taddei and Daniele De Rossi are all looking doubtful.
Nevertheless, the coach is not fazed by the Rossoneri's galactico line up.
"Five star Milan? I don't know. We will be playing 11 players and I don't know how many stars we will face or who will win," Spalletti told Sky Sport 24. "Of course it will be a difficult game, they have an excellent team and plenty of quality, both from set pieces and open play.
"However, I always give great value to my group. I am relaxed and I have always had faith in this club, even when things haven't gone well."
David Beckham could make his Serie A debut against Roma and Spalletti is full of praise for the Englishman.
"If we value his [Beckham's] qualities then he is a great champion, but we have to see his condition on Sunday," added Spalletti.

Adebayor Warns Roma, Delighted For African Ballon d'Or Win
Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor admits the Champions League clash against Roma will be difficult but he cannot wait to play against Francesco Totti.
The Giallorossi travel to the Emirates in February to fight for a place in the quarter finals of the Champions League in what promises to be an explosive encounter.
It was Adebayor's goal which knocked Milan out of the competition last term and he is hoping to cause another Italian upset this season.
"Roma are a difficult opponent," Adebayor told Il Corriere Dello Sport. "For us it will be a hard and tricky game because Roma are a team who have done really well in Europe over the last few years.
"They also have Totti, he is a great player. Of course, there is still some time before Roma and we have to recover in the league and win many games, then we can think about them."
Adebayor was at the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi picking up his new African Ballon d'Or award and he is delighted with the achievement.
"It's a massive satisfaction for me and the best personal award of my career so far," he smiled. "I have always dreamed of winning a prize like this from when I was young, and I am extremely happy.
"I hope I am here next year and win it again."
The Lupi are likely to take Adebayor's warning seriously. However, Totti may not play against Arsenal after picking up a hamstring injury which has ruled him out for two months.

Arsenal Rocked By New Injury Woes, Gallas Out For Fortnight
Arsenal face a potentially tricky tie when Premier League business resumes this weekend when the Gunners host Bolton Wanderers in their Emirates home.
They will have to contest the encounter without former captain William Gallas though, who picked up a hamstring problem during his side's clash with lower league Plymouth in the third round of the FA Cup last weekend.
Gallas will join Mikael Silvestre in the treatment centre, who is suffering from a thigh problem.
It is not all bad news for Arsenal fans though, as Arsene Wenger reassured the Red and White army that it will be a case of 'two in, two out.'
Ivorian international Kolo Toure has recovered from the inflammation of his groin, and Denilson is fully fit following his back troubles.
"Kolo and Denilson will be back available," Wenger confirmed on the club's official website.
"However unfortunately we have lost William Gallas with a hamstring problem."
He continued: "We lost Silvestre too with a thigh problem last week as well. So we have lost two players from the game on Saturday but we have gained two back.
"I think Gallas and Silvestre will be out for three weeks."

'Arsenal Kini Lebih Solid'
Rossi Finza Noor - detiksport
London - Arsenal kini tengah memburu playmaker asal Rusia, Andrei Arshavin.
Namun, hingga kini kepastian proses transfer Arshavin masih belum jelas.

I Haven't Found My Form At Valencia - Maduro
Hedwiges Maduro is one of the last remaining legacies of the Ronald Koeman era at Valencia, and has been used sparingly my new coach Unai Emery this season.
However the 23-year put in an excellent display in his sides convincing 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Primera Division last night.
Maduro is a midfielder by trade, but he has been employed in central defence in recent weeks by Emery as the injuries and suspension have mounted up.
He admitted he has been struggling for confidence, but is slowly finding his level at the club he joined from Ajax last January.
He told journalists, "Since the beginning of the season I knew it was going to be difficult, but had to work to try and help the team. Now I am getting minutes and I believe the coach trusts me. My only thought is Valencia."
He continued, "It was important to win at home versus such a difficult opponent and a direct rival. Our midfield played very well and we showed alot of confidence."
Utility Man?
But is Maduro concerned about having to play out of position? It appears not judging by his positive performance and reaction.
He explained, "There is no problem playing centre. Playing at the wings is slightly awkward for me, but I will play here to help the team."
Maduro made only his second start of the season, but if he continues to show such assurance he will be assured of more action in the future.

David Silva Double Helps Valencia Defeat Atlético Madrid
Coming into Saturday night's encounter, Valencia and Atlético Madrid could not be separated in the table, but ninety minutes later, Valencia had secured an important win and second place on the Primera Division.
The big news for Valencia was the return of David Silva to the starting line-up, after he'd made a few appearances as a substitute at the end of last year.
Atletico, meanwhile, lined up as expected, with the exception of Luis Garcia taking the place of the injured Maxi Rodriguez.
First Half
Much was expected from this fixture, and it only took a minute for it to come to life. David Villa went past Johnny Heitinga and slotted past Leo Franco, but the referee ruled that El Guaje had fouled the Dutchman. It was a borderline call, which could have gone either way. Seconds later, Franco was forced into another save, as Villa's shot from distance deflected towards goal.
Soon Valencia had another goal ruled out, and there were only four minutes on the clock! The ball smashed against the crossbar, leaving David Silva with an easy tap in, but the referee ruled that Juan Mata was offside. Whether he was interfering in the play was, as ever, a matter of interpretation, but the referee had no doubts.
There was no doubt as to which side was on top, with Valencia attacking with force at every opportunity. On 17 minutes, Joaquín's cross along the floor found Silva inches out, but his flick trickled agonizingly wide of the far post.
On the half hour, there was yet another moment of contention, as Villa appealed for a penalty, having been dragged down by Luis Perea in the box. Again, the referee waved play on, but on this occasion he looked to have made the wrong decision. That would become a recurring theme, as minutes later, Atleti suffered from an absolutely shocking decision.
The ball was crossed in to the box and Ruben Baraja quite literally threw himself to the floor, while the referee inexplicably blew for a non-existent penalty. Atletico were incensed, and understandably so. David Villa, however, was not bothered, and he coolly slotted home to give Valencia the lead.
The goal had clearly rattled Atletico, and with five minutes left, they were made to pay as Valencia launched an incisive attack. Miguel broke free on the right and set up David Silva, who controlled well into the box and slotted it past Leo Franco with his right foot. There were no doubts about this one, and Valencia looked on course for a comfortable win.
All that changed, however, with a minute to go. Ruben Baraja was adjudged to have fouled Kun Agũero in the box, and Diego Forlán duly stepped up and slotted into the bottom right hand corner. It was a strange incident, given that none of the Atléti players seemed intent on even appealing for the penalty, but they were not complaining, as they went into the break having reduced the deficit.
Second Half
The second half started as the first had finished, with the ball flowing from end to end, without any clear cut chances being created. Both Simão and Joaquín were getting forward at will, but they were being denied sufficient space to make a significant impact.
On the hour, Forlán had the first real chance of the half, but his shot from distance flew just wide of the far post. There was certainly no love lost between the two sids, with plenty of tasty challenges flying in and words being exchanged. Sensing the need for a change, Javier Aguirre sent on Florent Sinama-Pongolle for Luis García, who had endured a fairly disappointing game.
Unai Emery responded by removing Ruben Baraja and throwing on Manuel Fernandes, in an effort to inject some creativity into a game that was starting to get caught up in too many fouls and not enough chances. It did not take long for that to change, as David Silva marked his return to the starting line-up with another goal, this one right out of the top drawer. Receiving the ball from Joaquín, Silva strode forward and let fly from outside the box, and his shot swerved past Leo Franco and in at the near post.
It was a spectacular strike from Silva, who had been a class above everyone on the pitch, and had shown just how much Valencia had missed him. The momentum was with Los Che, and suddenly they looked like the only side capable of scoring. With 15 minutes to go, Atléti had a great chance to pull one back, but Mariano Pernia's free-kick went straight against the wall.
With about ten minutes to go, Emery withdrew a tiring Juan Mata and replaced him with Vicente, ensuring that there would be no respite for the visitors. Sinama soon had a half-chance, but his shot flew wide after jinking past four players on the edge of the box. Emery then made his final switch, taking off the hero of the night David Silva, and replacing him with Edu.
With time running out, Villa almost added a fourth when he went on a mazy run, but Perea finally got across to block his left footed shot. Rául García then played a neat one-two with Forlan, before being brought down just outside the box. Pernia rifled in the free-kick, but Renan pulled off a brilliant save low down to his right, thus seemingly extinguishing all hopes of an Atléti comeback. Agũero had not given up though, but his shot from distance was also well saved.
There was still time, however, for Simao and Edu to throw all sorts of insults at each other, but that was the last major incident of the match, as Valencia claimed all three points, moving up to second place in the process.

Valencia Categorically Deny Villa Will Leave
The 'will he? wont he?' David Villa transfer saga has been one of the longest-running stories in Spanish football in recent years. It was Real Madrid who circled in the summer to secure his services, and now in January it is big-spending Manchester City who want to land the Spanish international.
The player himself has vehemently denied that he would be moving to pastures new, and now the club have deemed it necessary to release a statement to re-assure supporters of Los Che that their prize asset will not be sold.
Speculation has been abound that Valencia's far from stable financial situation would lead to key players being sold to balance the books, but this morning the club first of all denied that both parties had reached an agreement to allow the player to leave, and secondly that they would allow any other club to enter into negotiations regarding a possible transfer.
Simply Not True
Valencia's vice president Fernando Gomez stated in a communication to the Spanish press that the club had already demonstrated in the summer that they have no intention to sell Villa, saying the player is 'valuable' and 'one whose performance can only increase.'
He continued by saying, "It is flatly untrue that the club has agreed anything with the player or his agent.
"David is happy at Valencia and we are extremely satisfied with his involvement and performance. It is irresponsible that this information would be released on the day of such an important game (against Atletico Madrid)"
Villa opened the scoring from the penalty spot in his sides 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid, a victory that moved Los Che into second position, albeit temporarily, in the Primera Division table.

Emery Relishes Valencia's Win Over Atletico Madrid
Unai Emery is optimistic about the future of Valencia, after praising their team dynamic following the 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid.
Speaking after the match, Emery said, "After our training during the week, I knew that we would have enough intensity to push for the win, and that is what we did."
Continuing, Emery added, "Atletico were not able to play because of our intensity, and the result is more a reflection of our merits than their mistakes. In the last two games we have given a good impression, as we always have except for the losses to Barcelona and Real Madrid. We played well at home and there was good chemistry with the fans."
Emery then praised his team's fitness levels, stating that the defensive work and man marking of the players was exemplary. He singled out David Silva, Miguel and Hedwiges Maduro for particular praise.
Finally, Emery spoke of Valencia's chances of winning the title: "All we can do is keep playing, and hope Barcelona slip up. On current form, I don't know if that will happen."

Player Ratings: Valencia 3-1 Atlético Madrid
VALENCIA
Renan 6.5 - Looked slightly dodgy on a few occasions as he dropped routine crosses but did make a couple of great saves towards the end, especially from Pernía's free-kick.
Miguel 6.0 - Got into some good positions inside the box but a shame his finishing was not better, otherwise he could have had a couple of goals. Did get caught out at the back on a few occasions by Simao and other Atlético forwards though.
Maduro 6.5 - Missed a great chance to put his side further ahead when he headed over from a few yards out but at the back he was solid and the coach will be pleased with his contribution.
Albiol 6.5 - Like his defensive partner he was solid throughout and dealt with the threats of Atlético well.
Moretti 6.5 - Didn't get forward as much as Miguel but did defend better, and also put some good balls into the box when he did venture down the wing.
Albelda 6.5 - Battled hard in midfield, sometimes too hard, but overall it was a tough, combative display and he will be pleased with his work.
Baraja 3.5 - May have won the penalty for Valencia but did so by throwing himself to the floor when there appeared to be no contact at all. Then up the other end he pushed Agüero for the Atlético penalty, aside from those incidents he didn't do too much remarkable in the midfield.
Joaquín 7.0 - A constant menace down the right flank where he tormented Pernía and put in some good crossed. Only disappointment was that he didn't provide an assist for a goal, but he created opportunities that perhaps his team-mates should have done better with.
Silva 8.0 - Wasn't a certainty to start the match this evening but how Unai Emery will be glad he decided to put him in the XI. The Spaniard showed just why he was such a loss to Valencia, darting at the Atlético backline and creating havoc with his runs. Finished the move with a lovely poke for his first goal and hit a sublime strike for his second from distance, deserved his standing ovation.
Mata 7.0 - Like Joaquín he was a menace down the flank and he delivered some outstanding crosses for his team-mates, a decent display from the Spaniard.
Villa 6.5 - Scored the penalty that gave Valencia the lead but for much of the match he was isolated and didn't really get into it that much, a surprise considering the quality of service around him.
Subs:
Fernandes 6 - Didn't really have time to alter the game much but was solid enough.
Vicente 6.5 - Made some great runs in the short time he was on and only a good block prevented him from seriously testing Leo Franco.
Edu 6 - Not enough time to change anything.
ATLÉTICO MADRID
Leo Franco 5.5 - Can't really be blamed for any of the goals but he didn't look comfortable at times, and he certainly didn't have an air of confidence.
Perea 5.5 - Not a bad performance from the right-back going forward but at the back he was caught out too many times, and needs to learn to defend better. Was also very lucky not to give away a penalty for fouling Villa in the first half.
Ujfalusi 6.5 - Undoubtedly the best of the back four, not that that is saying much, as he shackled Villa well and used his strength to deny the Valencia forwards.
Heitinga 4.5 - Always seems to struggle against the big teams and tonight was no exception as he constantly got turned inside out. Very fortunate to get away with gifting Villa an early chance on goal but never got to grips with the match.
Pernía 5.0 - Like Perea he was alright going forward but at the back he got beaten far too many times by Joaquín and only didn't pay for it more because the Spaniard won fouls each time.
Luis García 4.5 - Totally anonymous during his time on the pitch and his performance illustrated why Atlético desperately need to bring in some cover for the right wing this winter.
Assuncao 5.5 - Battled hard in midfield but at the end of the day was outdone by the wily Albelda, not a bad performance though, just not great.
Raúl García 5 - Like Assuncao he tried hard but his distribution was not great at all and there is no doubt Atlético missed Maniche.
Simao 7 - Yet again he was the best player on the pitch for Atlético as he burst down the left flank time and time again. Was involved in the move that won the penalty and put in some good crosses, another good performance from the Portugeuse international.
Agüero 6.5 - Worked hard up front but didn't get the ball enough and had to drop too deep to pick it up. Showed glimpses of his talent but he never really got into the match and his main contribution was to win the penalty.
Forlán 6.5 - Like Agüero he did try hard and the times he did get the ball he used it well, on most occasions. However, aside from the penalty, he never really tested Renan and desperately missed the service of Maxi Rodríguez and Maniche.
Subs:
Sinama-Pongolle 6.0 - Looked lively after coming on but didn't really create much except for a few runs.

Ex-Fiorentina Director Sees Roma Future For Pazzini
Giampaolo Pazzini looks poised to leave Fiorentina after four years during the January transfer window.
A host of clubs are said to be in contention to secure his services but former Gigliati transfer guru Fabrizio Lucchesi believes AS Roma would be an excellent choice.
“He could certainly play for them, as he is a quality player,” Lucchesi told Fiorentinanews.com.
“I reckon that much will depend on the system and the tactics that Luciano Spalletti will employ during [Francesco] Totti’s absence. But Pazzini can totally fit into their squad.”
Lucchesi captured the 24-year-old from Atalanta in 2005, but his stint in Tuscany has been overshadowed by the towering presence of Luca Toni and now Alberto Gilardino.
Sampdoria and Palermo are also allegedly keen to reel him in this month, but Premier League side Everton could join the hunt.
“I feel Pazzini is one of the brightest Italian prospects,” continued Lucchesi. “He can still improve, but he needs to play more in order to mature.
“However, I won’t rule out the possibility of him staying put in Florence, as the transfer market is odd and plans can change overnight.”

Bayern Munich’s Lukas Podolski Confirms Roma Link
Lukas Podolski has grown frustrated at his peripheral role at Bayern Munich and could opt to move on during the January transfer window.
Roma are in the hunt for a hitman to better cope with Francesco Totti’s absence and reports in the peninsula allege that the Germany international has ended up on their shopping list.
“I know that Roma are tracking me and would like to sign me,” Podolski told German weekly Bunte.
“I would have no problems in moving there, as they are a big club, even though I doubt Romans can speak Kolsch…”
Kolsch is the dialect spoken in Koln, where the 23-year-old grew up and started his footballing career, and the Bundesliga side are also allegedly interested to re-signing him.
“I need to play and cannot keep sitting on the bench,” insisted the striker. “I am not comfortable staying in Munich anymore and I feel it’s time to leave.
“I think I’m ready for an experience abroad, including Italy, but I know that a number of sides are after me in England too, namely Manchester City and Tottenham.
“My final choice will not be influenced by money, as my only desire is to play, possibly for a big side.”

Captain Van Persie Leads By Example As Arsenal Beat Plymouth
Three goals in six minutes early in the second half broke the deadlock with a vengeance at the Emirates, where Championship side Plymouth had kept their illustrious Premier League opponents at bay for the first 45 minutes.
Robin Van Persie scored Arsenal's first and third, and set up their second - an own goal by David Gray - while Karl Diguid briefly gave the Pilgrims hope.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is the second most successful manager in FA Cup history - and he paid due respect to the famous old tournament today by selecting a strong side to take on Devon's mid-table Championship side Plymouth Argyle.
Lukasz Fabianski was named as Wenger's goalkeeper for the FA Cup campaign this season, and Aaron Ramsey, a finalist last May for Cardiff, was given a start as Dutchman Robin van Persie was handed the captain's armband. Argyle manager Paul Sturrock gave a debut to David Gray, newly signed on loan from Manchester United, in defence.
The first serious effort on goal saw Van Persie take a shot which Pilgrims' keeper Romain Larrieu saved.
At the other end, with the Arsenal defence looking strangely hesitant, Jamie Mackie had an effort on goal from 12 yards blocked by Mikael Silvestre, before a Plymouth corner by Luke Summerfield was cleared by Nicklas Bendtner.
An Emmanuel Eboue shot was saved by Larrieu and a close-range header by Van Persie was wide of the target, before Samir Nasri's shot was blocked by Gray.
Barker blocked a William Gallas effort and Ramsey forced a save from Larrieu, but Arsenal had a problem when Silvestre suffered an injury on half-an-hour and had to be replaced by Kieran Gibbs.
But Plymouth were holding their own, Mackie's shot being blocked by Gallas and Fabianski making a save from a Paul Gallagher shot.
The enterprising Ramsey tried his luck from outside the penalty area with a shot that fizzed wide, and Eboue quickly followed suit in identical fashion.
A headed effort from inside the area by Bendtner went wide of the goal, and when Van Persie was fouled by Marcel Seip, Nasri produced a shot on goal direct from the free-kick, but Plymouth were decent value for their clean-sheet at the break.
However, Arsenal began the second period more purposefully and from a corner taken by Nasri on the left, Van Persie headed the Gunners in front on 47 minutes from inside the six-yard box.
Three minutes later, Arsenal were two-up. This time captain Van Persie was the provider, delivering the ball into the danger zone where Bendtner was just beaten to the ball by debutant Gray, who could only put the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of his own net.
However, Karl Duguid pulled one back for Plymouth almost immediately. The Pilgrims were awarded a free-kick for a foul by Diaby on Rory Fallon, Summerfield took the kick and there was skipper Duguid firing home from close-range with the aid of Gray's assist.
Eboue was replaced by Carlos Vela, and Gallagher by Steven MacLean, before Van Persie forced another save from Larrieu. Fallon shot over the bar at one end and Ramsey at the other, before Van Persie got Arsenal's third. His initial shot was saved by Larrieu, but he reacted quickly to despatch the loose ball.
Jack Wilshere replaced Bendtner late on, but the game finished with Nasri (twice) and Ramsey having shots saved by Larrieu - a pattern reflected in the match statistics, which showed that Arsenal enjoyed 69 percent of the possession, though Plymouth can hold their heads high after a spirited performance.
Arsenal: Fabianski; Sagna, Gallas, Djourou, Silvestre, Eboue, Diaby, Nasri, Ramsey, Van Persie, Bendtner.
Substitutes: Almunia, Vela, Wilshere, Adebayor, Bischoff, Gibbs, Randall.
Plymouth: Larrieu; Cathcart, Seip, Gray, Barker, Clark, Summerfield, Duguid, Mackie, Gallagher, Fallon.
Substitutes: Saxton, Timar, Folly, MacLean, Doumbe, Noone, Mpenza.

Arsene Wenger Glad To See The Back Of 2008
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted he is relieved that 2008 has ended and is looking forward to a much more profitable 2009.
The Gunners ended the year without a trophy, having missed out on the Premier League despite leading for large parts of the season and having been knocked out of the Champions League by Liverpool.
According to The Sun, Wenger confessed that he had found last year extremely disappointing.
“2008 was not a great year and the way the last season ended was very, very frustrating,” he said before adding, “We did not get the trophies we deserved because everything that could go wrong did go wrong.”
The Gunners have also struggled for consistency so far this season in the Premier League, but the Arsenal boss refused to admit he had made any mistakes. He said: “Unless you are completely crazy you can not say you would not have done anything differently.”
The Frenchman also appears confident that the club’s potential will blossom in the coming years. He explained: “The work we have done at this club over the last two or three years will only be appreciated by some people in 10 years’ time.”
Wenger also pointed to the club’s financial position as one of it’s greatest assets. The Arsenal boss said: “The way we have managed this club will put us in a very strong position because we don’t live on the edge financially.
“We do not rely on one person to finance us and we won’t depend on the banks.”
The Frenchman also insisted that despite his side’s lack of trophies, they were still in excellent shape. He concluded: “We have a new stadium, we are in good financial shape and we are still playing at the top of the table every year.”

Toure Not Going Anywhere, Insists Wenger
The winter window had begun in dramatic fashion at the Emirates as reports surfaced that Arsenal's Ivorian international Kolo Toure has handed in a transfer request.
The defender is alleged to be feeling perturbed at falling down the pecking order, as he was an unused substitute during the drab 1-0 victory over Portsmouth last Sunday, while Swiss centre half Johan Djourou has been seen as the preferable partner for former captain William Gallas.
Wenger used his latest press conference to state categorically that Toure is not going anywhere.
"The situation is that he is a player who has a two-and–a-half year contract and will remain with us," insisted the Frenchman.
"I am happy with players who are committed and Kolo is a big example of that. There was a minor incident that you could multiply by 20. It happens every day in every club and it is sorted out now. Kolo is happy here."
When asked whether Toure had requested to leave, Wenger said "Yes, but we spoke about it with him and I think he has changed his mind.
"It's not a question of Kolo Toure or William Gallas," the manager continued.. "It is that the two together are a bit short in the air. We needed to add some size centrally.
"I think they get on, personally. They get on much better than people think and if you lived with us every day you would see that. Anyway, nobody can prove fantastic friendships help you to win football games.
"Kolo did have a little problem when he came back from the African Nations Cup [earlier this year]. He wasn't exactly the same sharpness any more. Now, he has come back to his best level and he works very hard in training.
"He is a fantastic guy, Kolo Toure."
